Ascending and Descending (1989) are the last two painted art glass panels created by Albinas Elskus. At this time he was in the prime of his glass painting years and reveling in abstraction. He commented, “The abstract and the recognizable exist side-by-side. Often the abstract is within the recognizable and is absorbed by it becoming a natural part of it, the difference being that one can be labeled and the other cannot. The integrated coexistence intrigues me as I seek a visual design solution in my work where both are partners rather than adversaries.” (Notes and Commentaries on the Art of Painting On Glass”, Glass Art Society Journal, 1990).

Cobalt Blue Early Vintage Macchia 1982

Signed “Chihuly 1982” this Macchia is an earlier example of the series.  A solid vibrant cobalt blue interior with a white and multi-color speckled exterior make this a stunning Chihuly piece.

This smaller Macchia, along with 2 other pieces, were acquired by internationally recognized glass artist Albinas Elskus in exchange for his own stained glass work (“flat glass” as it was called by Chihuly) in the Summer of 1982. Albinas enjoyed teaching  summer workshops in stained glass and painting on glass at Pilchuk Glass School from 1980 through 1986, and was Artist in Residence in 1987. This piece is offered for sale by Albinas’ children.

Large Early Vintage Seaform Macchia 1982
